Album Review: Admission by Torche

US hard rock act Torche release their new album Admission on 12th July via Relapse Records. 15 years into their career, Torche have established themselves as a cornerstone of American heavy rock. Admission sees the band expanding on the themes and songwriting prowess that have always reverberated with music fans throughout their critically acclaimed discography.

While the album may be the archetypal Torche release with those trademark vocal harmonies meeting with hook-driven, pop sensibilities against the backdrop of heavy sludge riffs, it somehow manages to feel like they’ve taken it to the next level.

It’s that bit more versatile and instantaneous, it’s as if they’ve distilled their formula and ramped it up to create something special and captivating. ‘Slide’ and ‘Times Missing’ are immediate favourites, especially the latter with its slow, churning riffs engraining themselves in your subconsciousness. Five minutes later and it’s your new favourite track.

‘Admission’ is the band’s most accessible track to date, in essence a monstrous pop rock track, it’ll give you some classic stoner rock chills. ‘Reminder’ and ‘Extremes of Consciousness’ are excellent tracks, up there with the band’s best material, the guitar work shines in its multi layered textures. The huge repetitive riffs of ‘On the Wire’ are as devastating as they are luscious before ‘Inferno’ sees the band at their crushing heaviest while ‘Changes Come’ rounds the album of in immediate and hook heavy fashion.

AD Rating 7.5/10
