EP Review: Holy Lights and Shadows by Gypsy Circus
Edinburgh four-piece Gypsy Circus release their new EP Holy Lights And Shadows on 8th February. Talking about EP, the band say, “the theme that runs through the tracks is awareness. Knowing what you want, not following an agenda that does not work for you and being more in touch with nature/yourself. We know how easy it is to get into the habit of doing something or having a routine that you want to change. Making the initial change might be difficult but it will be worth it in the long run.”
The EP has a big classic rock feel, it’s all big guitar licks with the main focus being on frontman Aaron King’s husky vocal. Think 3 Doors Down, with a side of watered down Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. It’s an EP that is perfectly enjoyable but ultimately pretty forgettable. Opener, ‘Molly’s Eyes’ is too dull to have much impact, there’s improvement in ‘Falling To The Sky’ and ‘Lucid Highs’ is easily the EPs highlight. Here you’ll find some excellent guitar work. The title track is weak and with it the EP limps to a close.
