EP Review: Skin and Bones by All Ears Avow
All Ears Avow release their new EP Skin & Bones on 14th December. The band’s knack for writing a soaring melody and catchy chorus shines through in this single. Vocalist and guitarist, Claire Sutton says it embodies the themes that run throughout the EP, “the notions of being comfortable in your own skin and not pretending to be something you’re not. It’s pretty much a celebration of being yourself and doing things for yourself, which is something that people forget the importance of.”
It’s a compelling EP that walks the line between power pop and alt rock. The rock attitude offsets the pop sensibilities perfectly. Title track and EP opener ‘Skin & Bones’ sets the tone that continues throughout. ‘All Your Pieces’ has a funk pop element amongst the big riffs and melodies before ‘Got Lucky’ draws inspiration from the band’s parents’ record collections – Salt N Pepper, Chaka Khan, Eurythmics to Roxette and Duran Duran.
‘Over The Wall’ is the strongest track on the EP with a forthright and commanding stomp before ‘Fake’ rounds things off in style with ounces of swagger.
