Album Review: Serac by Caffeine
Hannover post-metal / doom act Caffeine release Serac on 25th May via Charming Man Records. Apocalyptic, monumental, devastating… think of Coliseum meet Doomriders meet old Mastodon meet Neurosis.
Although billed as post-metal / doom it isn’t either, rather borrowing a little from each and packaging it in an accessible and immediate wrapper. It’s got a progressive metal feel, akin to Baroness, but it’s simpler – deconstructed for an easy listen.
There’s all the riffs, groove and frantic drumming you could ever need from a progressive metal album, it’s as if there’s all the right ingredients but they’ve forgotten the seasoning. On first listen you feel it is good but nothing more. In all honesty that’s probably where you’ll leave it, it’s too bland to tempt you into listening again.
Conversely it isn’t bad, just unremarkable. By the time you get to the sixth track it all gets a little samey and if it hadn’t already blurred into one it will now.
