EP Review: Get Terrified by Itoldyouiwouldeatyou

UK indie-punk/emo collective itoldyouiwouldeatyou release their new EP Get Terrified on 20th April via Alcopop! Records x Failure By Design Records. The EP will package all of the band’s physically-unreleased previous singles to date alongside brand-new material.

Blending a delightful progressive emo sound with tinged of math-rock and indie punk ITYIWEY serve up an enthralling and pulsating EP. Elaborating on the themes behind the EP, Ashworth continues: “The world around us is trying to make us forget how to look after each other. It is trying to turn the young against themselves and to co-opt the old. It tells the working class that solidarity doesn’t work anymore and tells minorities that they are on their own. It relies on cynicism. I am angry, but I am not and will never be cynical. So, take the feelings and memories that make you up, realise that they and you are a product of your environment, and change it.

“Get Terrified is about coming home. Realising the answer was here the whole time, and trying your hardest to love – through anger, through disruption and through solidarity. Get terrified, get angry, and scream love until your throat bleeds. We are coming home together.”

You might be familiar with previous singles ‘Mourn’ and ‘Divine Violence’ and they’re good starting points, think American Football mixed with Get Cape Wear Cape Fly and you’ll be on the right track. Title track and opener ‘Get Terrified’ shows the potential at the heart of the band, creating a captivating and instantaneous sound full of hooks, while closer ‘Off Brand’ may point at the direction ITYIWEY are headed. It’s more ambitious with a soundscape that’s both expansive and dreamlike. Whether it marks the start of a departure from the template or it’s just a great closer is yet to be decided, either way get it in your ears.
