With alt rock act DARK STARES due to release their new album Darker Days Are Here To Stay, on Friday 11th May and their recently released lyric video to ‘Sweet Rider 5’ (watch below). We caught up with the band to get their influences.
Edwyn Collins – A Girl Like You
This song had a profound effect particularly on us brothers growing up – it’s timeless. The rhythmic, hypnotic quality to it and the guitar tone on that solo line is just perfect.
Led Zeppelin – Ten Years Gone
Led Zep is another childhood favourite – I like to check in with this one from time to time. It’s a real journey…very emotive.
Kings of Leon – My Party
Groove and swagger in equal measure – a firm favourite in the Dark Stares camp.
Arcade Fire – The Suburbs
I’m off to see them soon so they’ve been on my mind of late. They’re such an expansive, talented band; they really can turn their hand to anything. I love the wistfulness they’ve captured here.
Mini Mansions – Death Is A Girl
A real spooky little toe-tapper – we’re all big fans of Queens of the Stone Age in Dark Stares so delving into these guys was a no-brainer.
Death From Above 1979 – Crystal Ball
As a bass player, DFA79 will always have a special place in my heart. I remember watching them at a dingy show in London years ago and was blown away by the drive and power brought out by the bass being at the forefront. I’ve always loved the urgency of this song.
Toto – Africa
The jukebox unifier and the source of a thousand great memes!
