Album Review: Feel Good by WRONG

Miami noise rock quartet WRONG release their sophomore album Feel Great on 13th April via Relapse Records. Uncompromising, bludgeoning groove and riffs are the order of the day all served up with a side order of aggression.

Formed in 2014 from the ashes of punk/hardcore trio Capsule and featuring former members of Torche and Kylesa amongst their ranks, WRONG play Helmet / Unsane inspired heavy noise rock. Compare Feel Great to their self-titled 2016 debut and you’ll find eleven songs that are faster, heavier, angrier yet also more melodic than their breakout debut. The album was self-produced by the band and recorded at various studios around Miami with mixing handled by guitarist Ryan Haft and artwork by Rick Smith of Torche.

While it’s a strong and formidable album it’s a little hard to get past the idea that WRONG are simply a Helmet for 2018. They’ve taken the template, modernised it slightly and come up with something that varies ever so slightly from its inspiration.

There’s nothing wrong with having Helmet as your inspiration, but here it plays dangerously close to being a homage. Certainly, if you’d never heard Helmet before then you’d fall in love with this record, it’d be a game changer. Rather than enjoying this as an album in its own right, you get the temptation to go back and listen to the 1992 classic Meantime.

When you have the standout track being the 55 second ‘Crawl Instead’ it isn’t a good sign. It isn’t bad, it’s just a little too bland and all too familiar.
