With Ghost Bath’s new album Starmourner dropping on 21st April, Frontman Dennis Mikula curated a playlist with the theme of ‘Synesthesia’… over to Dennis.
I think creating another world was a big inspiration in the concept behind Starmourner, in the music, the artwork, and the paintings. I tried to create an ethereal, other-worldly experience for the listener.
These are 10 tracks to get lost in another world to. I’ve stated this a few times but I get very vivid imagery in my head when I hear music -sort of a synesthesia. So, I will describe in detail what I see in my mind’s eye with each of these tracks. Some make more sense than others, and some are more obvious.
(ps. No, I don’t do drugs)
- ESPRIT 空想: ESPRIT.WAV
A surreal futuristic city. Floating whales, a pearl staircase, a mass of bubbles and dolphins. Pyramids. Computers and technology but from the past and re-purposed in a different way. Happiness. Relaxation. Weightlessness. Is this a dream?
- Diskette Romances – Fortune Gardens
Slightly moody. An overcast sky while walking through an outdoor mall, concrete ground and the shops all around with various clothing and items. Multiple floors of shops and people walking by carrying bags of what they’ve purchased. A woman passes wearing a blue headband and spandex. Another person passes with one of those beige sun hats.
- death’s dynamic shroud.wmv – 너 땜에 맘이 맘이 맘이 맘이 괴로워요
A day at the park in Ueno, Tokyo. Crowds of people eating ice cream. It’s a hot day. The trees are green and the sun is out but there is a nice breeze. Lots of school children out for class field trips. There’s lots to explore and the day has just begun.
- Artificial Brain – Absorbing Black Ignition
A dark grey planet filled with insect like creatures. Their cities are built into the planet’s soil like termites. They use advanced computer technology but also are unable to communicate with any human. Cages of humans forgotten about long ago. The alien creatures open themselves up and inside are tiny ants who control the giant insect body.
- DARKPYRAMID – A Heart Full Of Love
Cyberpunk post-apocalyptic world. Android lovers. Nightlife in a big city where anything goes. Biker gangs with colored mohawks and goggles. Blood bars and sketchy people in the alleyways. It’s raining and the neon signs from the clubs reflect off of the puddles into the night sky.
- Uaral – Depression
Standing inside of a small boat, under a roof and behind a door as a storm starts outside. Someone is out on the deck looking out into the ocean. They get soaked by the rain and are wearing all black in contrast to the all white boat and the grey of the sky and ocean. Sympathy for this person is strong.
- Angelo Badalamenti – Love Theme from “Twin Peaks”
Romantic but in a tainted way. Looking at someone across the room of a smoke-filled bar with red carpets and lots of gold furnishings. A band plays but is ignored by all, especially by whom you are looking at. A woman with green eyes, dead to the world, but somehow still searching. Men in white suits and black ties occupy a booth not far away, laughing and jeering.
- 식료품groceries – 슈퍼마켓Yes! We’re Open – Intrance (Realities)
In an underground department store. Finally found the produce and nothing on the packaging can be read. The place is mostly empty other than a few clerks sitting at their registers. Everything looks so strange but familiar at the same time. Again, is this a dream? Hard to tell.
- Darkspace – Dark 4.19
All I can see is half-human, half-robotic beings. Mostly white with blue eyes. Something H.R. Giger would paint. Lots of open space around. The technology is complicated but elegant in design. A moon rover passes by. So many moons and celestial bodies in the sky. De-humanizing sounds. A city of cold steel and other metals, not much else.
- ECO VIRTUAL 大気研究音楽 – CUMULUS FRACTUS
Late night in a motel room. Stains on the carpet and a single lamp that is off. The entire room is lit by a tv screen playing mindless programming. A single bed. The place smells of mould and loneliness. Staleness. Stagnation. Stuck in a place in life that there seems to be no way out of.
