EP Review: Funky Queen by Black Mirrors

Belgian rockers Black Mirrors release their debut EP Funky Queen via Napalm Records on 3rd March. A big dirty rock and roll EP, imagine you’re 13 and you want to emulate Nirvana, Queens of the Stone Age and the White Stripes… Black Mirrors have done just that.

Does that make it a bad EP? Not all, however it doesn’t make for a particularly interesting 4 tracks. If you’re looking for a band that can copy the sounds of the aforementioned bands then you couldn’t ask for any better. It’s an excellent copy. You could be forgiven for thinking ‘The Mess’ (minus the female vocal) was the White Stripes.

‘Canard Vengeur Masque’ stands out as being the most unique (note, that’s really pushing the definition of unique) and is a quality listen, however the problem with it and the rest of the EP is why wouldn’t you just listen to the bands Black Mirrors try to emulate rather a copycat? Probably best that we don’t say much about their cover of ‘Kick Out the Jams’ but it’s pretty damning when they don’t even make a slight effort to add something to their version.
