EP Review: Sketches of a Kone by Kone

English rock act Kone are set to release their new 3 track EP Sketches of a Kone on September 1st. You’re instantly reminded of older rock acts like The Velvet Underground and Shellac with touches of Sonic Youth and Savages thrown in, but it’s the post-punk edge that really suckers you in.

According to the band themselves “HYKO is an homage to Rhys Chatham – and a call for solidarity. Party is a song about the pleasure of being alone and Hotel Europa is about connecting with people because, death”.

While the opening track doesn’t do much it’s the slow and gradual swagger of ‘Party’ that shines bright and the excellent guitar work of ‘Hotel Europa’ that make you think Kone could be something special. The former is subtle and delicate, begging you to fall in love with the track. It’s on ‘Hotel Europa’ that it all comes together in intricate guitar parts and a swelling bass line that begs to be listened to on repeat.

If this is the marker of things to come from Kone then they’ll be huge.
