EP Review: Dog Party Call by Hoggs Bison

Emerging Bristol based math rock act Hoggs Bison have released their debut EP Dog Party Call. Coming in at the more traditional end of math rock the Slint influences shine through setting the band out from their contemporaries who favour a faster paced style.

Overall it’s a solid debut. Opener ‘The Wrong Right’ and closer ‘Bobs Secret Cache’ stand out as the best tracks. Their Don Caballero feel gives them a weight and swagger that suckers you in, the latter is especially strong and hints at the potential within the band.

The only problem being that it’s all been done before and it doesn’t sound that fresh. It’s in no way a bad EP, quite the opposite – the talent is remarkable and equalled by how infectious it is – rather it does the job of marking out Hoggs Bison as ones to watch. Once they hone their sound and cut out their own niche they’ll be a formidable act.

Stream the EP below and decide for yourself.
