EP Review: Brainwork by Trash Boat

Guest Reviewer: Matt Dickinson

We seem to be in a pretty good place in terms of UK pop punk right now – Neck Deep have blown up massively, Roam are doing very well for themselves and Trash Boat seem to be chasing behind them and catching up quickly. All three are signed to Hopeless records – quite an achievement for young UK bands.

Brainwork is the second EP from the St Albans pop punks and is a well crafted gem much like their Hopeless label mates have all put out. Big things should be on the way as well, as the band won a fan vote to play at this year’s Slam Dunk Festival. Opener ‘Taylor’ is a short and sharp blast coming in at just over a minute that sounds like it wouldn’t be out of place on a Neck Deep EP. ‘Saving Face’ is the first real slice of proper pop punk goodness, and gives the band the chance to show off what they can do. Technically well played and giving Tobi Duncan chance to show off what he can do vocally, it’s a great way to introduce newcomers (myself included) into what the band can do.

Single ‘Perspective’ shows off the faster side of things, with riffs and lyrics that wouldn’t be out of place in a Story So Far record. Yet at the same time it is a song that feels like it’s up beat and with some more plays, you’d catch yourself singing along to this – a fast paced pop punk gem that makes you want to hit repeat. ‘As Seen On Screen’ keeps up the pace, with another fast and snappy blast, lyrically very good and musically tight it’s one that you’d go back to again. Closer ‘Eleven’ ramps up the pace even more, it’s fast and punchy, definitely in the Neck Deep or Story So Far camp; and only slows down to build into a rousing gang chant – and lets be honest who doesn’t love one of those? “Rip my heart from my sleeve, sink it deep inside my chest” will be ringing out of punk rock clubs for a while I feel!

For me this is a 9/10 ep. Like their labelmates Neck Deep and Roam, Trash Boat have worked on Brainwork to produce a glowing example of what a young band can do.

  1. I haven’t heard of any of these bands other than Story So Far, but yes Punk Pop seems to be coming back. I don’t know what I really think about it. I liked Punk Pop, but it was too limited to capture my love like Nu Metal did. Still, it’s good to see the reign of crappy brutal metal comes to an end.
