Album Review: Antique by Lighteater
Brooklyn post-rock / post-metal act Lighteater released their new album, Antique earlier in the month and it is a formidable blend of big crunch riffs and post rock dynamics. Consisting of just four tracks it clocks in at just over 30 minutes meaning it has the grandeur of post-rock, yet it defiantly has the balls of post-metal.
‘Tailhook’ gets Antique off to a meander post-rock start. The guitars wash over you, taking you to a place of sonic oblivion. It’s relaxing and has all the hallmarks of a great God Is An Astronaut style track. It is on second track ‘10oz’ that Antique really kicks off. The crunching riffs add a fantastic layer to the sound of Lighteater. While the lighter post-rock moments lull you in, it is more metal style riffs that catch your attention and make you take notice.
The riffs around the three minute mark of ‘Quiver’ are both brooding and crunching. The aggression sits perfectly beside the dynamic and expansive quieter moments. The churning riffs of ‘Flux’ are a joy to experience and some of the finest post-metal work out there.
Antique is an enthralling listen, taking you across multiple musical landscapes you’ll find yourself being suckered in and giving it multiple listens. On each listen you’ll notice different nuances that thrill and excite you as a listener.
