EP Review: Starting Fires In My Parents House by Blis

Guest Reviewer: Matt Dickinson

When I first hit play on Starting Fires In My Parents House by Blis. I thought maybe I’d stumbled onto a new Beach Slang record. But then it kicked in. The melody and sound is there, but this a far more aggressive angry and emo vibe. Yet there are still great melodies in here.

For a band that cites Weatherbox and American Football as their influences you can see where they’re coming from, but they way that they’re headed is a whole different direction, mainly the way they feel when they put pen to paper for the songs they write. If this EP is anything to go by, then there’s a lot of potential here, I’ve had it on repeat all morning, my only issue is that other than the standout track for me (opener “Floating Somewhere High and Above” ) then the rest of it seems to blend into one. This is a solid EP, no doubt about it but it hasn’t got something to really make me want to tell all my friends about it!

  1. Short and sweet review just like this EP! Your words told me exactly what my ears tell me when listening to this EP. But, unlike you, I will definitely tell all my friends about Blis. and this brief emotional roller coaster of a EP.
